Before you start siphoning out the water from your font, covering it, or filling it up with anything else for the season of Lent, let’s talk about whether or not that’s a good idea.
In this short video, Diana looks at what the Church teaches about the season of Lent and the liturgical guidelines we are given that should inform our practice around the baptismal font, especially during the season of Lent. The theology of the lenten season highlights both the penitential and baptismal aspects of the liturgy. And although it might be common and dramatic to see empty fonts during these forty days, that recent practice doesn’t match the meaning of this season of preparation for the Easter feasts.

I’m thinking of getting a small table top fountain to have at our group table. And also have a fountain in my own home as a reminder of our baptism.

Thank you so much for this. It was PERFECTLY timed, as our Liturgy Coordinator had just put a sign up “No Holy Water During Lent”. I shared your video with her and our pastor emphasizing the references. Catholic Answers also has a great comment.. I give each Inquirer/Newcomer a bottle of holy water and a handout about holy water, and had just talked about water and baptism with our catechumens and candidates so this was a “God moment” here.
