  1. What is the minimum age requirement for the Scrutinies to be mandatory?

I heard it was 13 years old, but I cannot find it in the Rite book.

    Thank you!

Hi, Martha! It’s good that you check the Rite book for your answer. As you discovered, there is no age requirement listed in the Rite book because the Scrutinies are required for all the elect regardless of their age. It is a requirement by virtue of their status of being members of the Elect. The Scrutinies are part of the initiation process designed for unbaptized adults and children of catechetical age. If an unbaptized child who has reached catechetical age becomes a catechumen, they will celebrate the Scrutinies once they have been elected by your bishop through the Rite of Election.

  2. Scrutinies are mission -critical during the catechumen process. However it is strange that this is left to the discretion of the Bishop to embrace this process. This is where the “Elect” get lost in the Parish with no “aftercare’ from Parishners. I was fortunate to go through the entire process of the 3 ” Scrutinies” with a group of 30 with 30 Godmothers and I could see that Mass time is lengthened. I guess that is why ” this process no longer exists. Unfortunately Parishners have to be present due to their significant role. Bishops need to embrace this in their dioceses, Otherwise the church will lose disciples to other churches

    1. Hi Rose. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I wanted to clear up what might be a misunderstanding. The scrutinies aren’t optional. It is not up to the bishop to decide if they are celebrated or not. They are mandatory in every diocese.

The bishop may excuse an individual elect from one of the scrutinies for a very serious reason. The scrutinies are meant to be a powerful, transformative experience for the whole community—not just an “extra” to get through.
