You’ve celebrated the rites well and your parishioners have gotten to know your catechumens and candidates. Everyone’s happy.
But deep in your gut, you know something is still missing. Your parishioners haven’t yet felt the same fire that you have about these rites. They haven’t got it yet that these rites matter and make a difference, not just in the lives of the seekers but in their own.
For the most part, they enjoy knowing that the catechumenate process is happening in the parish and they like participating in the rites. But they see themselves as consumers of the ministry you’re doing rather than protagonists with the Holy Spirit in the work of evangelization that belongs to all the faithful.
Nick and Diana recently learned in their own parish what that one thing was that was missing from their celebrations of the catechumenate rites that would make that shift in the mindset of their parishioners. But once they had the courage to do that one thing, it made all the difference.
