Compared to some of the other rites of the catechumenate, the Scrutinies can seem a bit boring, intimidating, or tedious. When they come across that way, it’s hard to get your assembly engaged in them, much less, your elect! And that can lead to treating the Scrutinies as unnecessary. But the Scrutinies can be some of the most profound, personal, and powerful rites your community can celebrate…if you know what they should sound like. Learn how to make your Scrutinies flow so that your entire assembly can connect more readily to God’s grace through these simple rites.
Do you have a reference for the separate verses you read by “Horatio” ?
Hi, Cecily! The text is by Horatius Bonar. You can read the verses here and learn more about the hymn:

Thank you for the beautiful and powerful explanation regarding the Scrutinies. So often the ritual is so minimal and functional. Would LOVE to see a video of the ritual as you describe it. Maybe a future video. It would also be helpful to share w/ team, pastor, music director/liturgist, etc. to see and experience what is possible.
Thanks, Steve! I’m glad the video was helpful. And I’m grateful for the idea for a future video!
