As we get ready for the new translation of the initiation rites, I want to look at one major change we will need to implement However, this change isn’t new. It is already embedded in the current translation of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.
We may start using the new translation of the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults on December 1, 2024. The new translation gives us the opportunity to finally implement a shift in how we approach the catechumenate process. I know some of us might be apprehensive about the changes the new translation will foster. However, let’s be clear: this isn’t just about updating language.
The publication of the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults is an invitation to finally embrace the vision the Church has held for decades – a vision that moves us beyond the confines of the school model and into a dynamic, conversion-centered apprenticeship model.
Take a look back to 1988 when the English version of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults was first introduced. Even then, the call for a paradigm shift, away from academic classrooms and toward a more experiential journey of faith was clear. But honestly, many of our parishes, perhaps even yours, are still operating under the familiar, yet limited, structure of the school model.
Why the shift?
The answer is simple: people don’t fall in love with Jesus by passively absorbing facts. They fall in love by encountering Jesus Christ and living out their faith in a community of his disciples. They fall in love by walking alongside others who are passionate about their relationship with Christ. They fall in love by seeing how faith transforms lives and inspires action.
The apprenticeship model in action
So, what does this apprenticeship model look like in practice? Imagine this:
- Instead of rigidly structured classes, your parish becomes a living, breathing curriculum. Seekers learn by actively participating in the life of the parish, from participating in Sunday liturgy and other sacramental celebrations and by engaging in apostolic witness out in the world.
- Instead of being lecturers or book discussion leaders, we transform into companions and guides. We listen to seekers’ stories, walk with them through their doubts and questions, and help them discover the presence of Christ in their everyday lives.
- Instead of trying to cram conversion into a neat timeline, we recognize its gradual nature. We create space for seekers to encounter Christ at their own pace, to wrestle with their questions, and to gradually deepen their relationship with God.
People don’t fall in love with Jesus by passively absorbing facts. They fall in love by experiencing the vibrant tapestry of faith lived out in a community.
Imagine what could happen
We understand change can be daunting. Some might worry about time commitments, the need for parishioner training, or even resistance from those comfortable with the traditional model. But let’s not let fear hold us back. This shift is not about adding more to our plates but about transforming how we already engage with seekers.
Here’s the exciting truth: the apprenticeship model is not only more effective, it’s also deeply enriching for everyone involved! Imagine the joy of seeing our parishes come alive with renewed purpose as parishioners embrace their role as mentors and guides. Imagine the transformative power of genuine spiritual accompaniment as we accompany seekers on their unique journeys of faith.
What is the next step?
